Best Pellets for the Daystate Red Wolf: A Tested Approach
The Daystate Red Wolf takes one excuse away from you. Its electronics hold velocity flat across almost the whole fill, so when two pellets group differently, it's the pellet — not the air. That makes the Red Wolf the easiest rifle in this series to test properly, and the hardest one to blame.
Why the Red Wolf is the easiest rifle to test on
The Red Wolf is Daystate's electronic PCP, built around Mapped Compensation Technology — a microprocessor that reads cylinder pressure and tells a solenoid valve exactly how far to open. It behaves as an electronic regulator, and the published consistency figures are the reason it matters here: reviewers have recorded roughly 10 fps of variation across a 450-shot string in .22, and about 5 fps over 50 shots.
For a pellet test, that changes the job:
- The air is effectively removed as a variable. On most rifles you spend half the test avoiding the parts of the fill where velocity drifts. Here, a difference between two pellets is almost certainly the pellet. Your groups become an unusually clean signal.
- Three power settings means three separate tests. The rifle stores Low, Medium and High energy settings, selectable in seconds. A pellet that wins on High may not win on Low — heavier pellets in particular need the energy to stabilise. Test on the setting you actually shoot, and re-test if you change it.
- Calibre and power options are unusually wide. The Red Wolf has been offered from a sub-12 ft·lb .177 through .22 and .25 up to high-power FAC variants. A shortlist that suits a 12 ft·lb .177 is close to irrelevant for a 50 ft·lb .25 — check which rifle you're actually reading advice about.
That last point is the one that trips people up in forum threads. Red Wolf owners span a far wider power range than Air Arms or Weihrauch owners do, so "my Red Wolf loves X" needs a power figure attached before it means anything to you.

These pellets come up repeatedly in owner threads and published reviews. Treat this as a shortlist to test, not a result — we have not run controlled tests on your rifle. Note the weights: Red Wolf recommendations skew heavier than most, because so many are FAC rifles.

Match the pellet to your power, not to the badge. More than any other rifle in this series, Red Wolf advice online comes from rifles making wildly different energy. A 25 gr .22 pellet that shines at 35 ft·lb will be sluggish and unstable at 11.5 ft·lb. Before you buy on a recommendation, find out what the recommender's rifle was making.
As always, buy two head sizes where offered — commonly 4.50/4.51/4.52 mm in .177. It's worth noting that the strongest .177 recommendation above specifies the 4.52 head explicitly, which tells you how much this variable can move a group.
How to run the test
The method is the same one in our pellet testing guide — adapted for an electronic rifle:
- Three to five candidates appropriate to your power level, ideally spanning two weights and two head sizes.
- Off a rest, bipod or bags. You're testing the pellet, not your hold.
- One distance, the one you actually shoot.
- One power setting, and note which. This is the Red Wolf-specific step. Don't compare a group shot on Medium against one shot on High, and record the setting alongside the group.
- Two or three 5-shot groups per pellet, one session, similar wind.
- Measure every group and compare averages — the actual millimetres, not an impression.
Because the electronics remove so much noise, wind becomes proportionally the biggest remaining variable. If it's gusty, read reading the wind for air rifle and shoot the lulls. Use the group size chart to interpret your numbers at your distance.
Pellet does the measuring. Photograph each target and the app measures the group in millimetres, then ranks every pellet you've tested by average group size — so the winner is obvious without a caliper or a spreadsheet.
What to log (and why the lot number matters)
A pellet test is only worth as much as the record you keep of it. For every group, log:
- Pellet, weight and head size — "JSB Exact" alone won't be enough in six months.
- Power setting — on a Red Wolf this is as important as the pellet itself.
- Lot / batch number from the base of the tin. Batches shift; if your groups suddenly open up, a batch change is the first suspect.
- Distance and group size in millimetres, centre to centre.
- Conditions — wind and temperature above all.

What is the best pellet for a Daystate Red Wolf?
In .177, JSB Exact Heavy 10.34 gr in the 4.52 head is far and away the most repeated owner recommendation, with Daystate's own Rangemaster Sovereign Hunter close behind. In .22 it depends heavily on power: JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy 18.13 gr for moderate power, the 25 gr-plus Monster class for FAC rifles. Test three or four over measured groups before committing.
Does the Red Wolf's electronics make pellet choice less important?
No — it makes it easier to measure. MCT holds velocity remarkably flat, which removes the air as a variable but does nothing to change how a given pellet fits your barrel. What it does mean is that a difference you see between two pellets is more trustworthy than the same difference seen on an unregulated rifle.
Do I need to re-test if I change power setting?
Yes, if you've changed it meaningfully. The three stored settings alter muzzle energy, and pellet stability is energy-dependent — a heavy pellet that groups beautifully on High can wander on Low. Log the setting with every group so you can tell the two effects apart.
Why do Red Wolf pellet recommendations vary so much?
Because Red Wolf owners shoot a much wider power range than most. The platform has been sold from sub-12 ft·lb .177 up to high-power FAC variants in larger calibres, so a recommendation from a 35 ft·lb .22 has little bearing on a 11.5 ft·lb one. Always check the power behind the advice.
